Cybill Disobedience charts the life and times of the actress, best known for her role as Maddy in the hit 80s show "Moonlighting" and for parts in Taxi Driver and the Last Picture Show. She has since gone on to find fame as the star of her own sitcom but in Hollywood circles, it seems, the rumour mill cared less about her activity on screen and more about her life behind the bedroom doors. Along with several failed relationships she has had run-ins with some of the Tinseltown's most admired men, and tales such as the night Elvis took her and a friend to the movies are recounted with wit and humour. The book really gets into its stride when Cybill dishes the dirt on her two most popular vehicles and there are some genuinely frank and surprising revelations to be found here. The bitchiness and backstabbing of TV executives, rival stars and script writers are all laid bare here though Cybill never pretends it all went on around her. She did, on more than one occasion, wade into the thick with all cannons blazing, though it usually ended up with another exec or star hating her. The rivalry with her "Cybill" co-star Christine Baranksi makes for particularly bitchy reading, though Cybill is careful not to actually attack her in print, instead ridiculing the press speculation that she tried to steal Christine's best jokes, or more often than not, just the show. It's an affectionate and honest story of Hollywood success and Cybill's wry and witty voice shines through. She has genuinely laid herself out in the open and you can't help but feel attracted to her somewhat self-imposed vulnerabilty. Open, honest and immensely readable, Cybill Disobedience is as sassy and sexy as its subject matter. --Jon Weir

Terry Pratchett ist ein Phänomen ganz besonderer Art. Sie haben noch nie einen Scheibenwelt-Roman gelesen? Am ehesten wäre ein Scheibenwelt-Roman vielleicht noch mit Monty Pythons Holy Grail vergleichbar, jener Mischung aus typisch britischem Sinn für das Absurde und zwerchfellzerreißendem, geistreichem Humor. Jingo ist Pratchetts zwanzigster Scheibenwelt-Roman und der vierte, in dem wieder die Stadtwache von Ankh-Mopork mit von der Partie ist.

Zu Beginn des Romans taucht plötzlich eine Insel zwischen Ankh-Morpork und Al-Khali, der Hauptstadt von Klatch, aus dem Meer auf. Beide Städte erheben Anspruch auf die Insel. Lord Vetinari, dem Patrizier, ist es nicht gelungen, den Hohen Rat davon zu überzeugen, daß Gewalt keine Lösung ist, obgleich er die Ratsmitglieder daran erinnert, daß Ankh-Morpork keine Armee besitzt, und seines Wissens nach "eine solche allgemein als unabdingbar für die erfolgreiche Durchführung eines Krieges gilt". Hauptmann Mumm von der Wache für Recht und Ordnung muß herausfinden, wer den Prinzen Khufurah, den Gesandten von Klatsch, angeschossen hat und deren Botschaft in Brand gesteckt hat, ehe ein Krieg ausbricht.

Pratchetts Charaktere sind sympathisch und unglaublich unterhaltsam, angefangen bei Kapitän Karotte, der immer die guten Eigenschaften seiner Mitmenschen sieht und diese beim Fußballspiel umzusetzen weiß, bis hin zu Wachtmeister Colon und seinem Kumpel Korporal Nobbs, die in der Lage sind "auf einem nassen Bürgersteig den Boden unter den Füßen zu verlieren". Dann ist da noch der mysteriöse D'reg, der 71stündige Ahmed. Welche Rolle spielt er bei alledem, und warum 71stündig? Falls es Ihnen nichts ausmacht, sich über die Dummheit von Menschen im allgemeinen und Regierungen im besonderen krankzulachen, werden Sie Ihre wahre Freude an Jingo haben. --Nona Vero

Lord Vetinari, the Patrician, has failed to convince the Ruling Council that force is a bad idea, despite reminding them that they have no army--"I believe one of those is generally considered vital to the successful prosecution of a war." Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, has to find out who shot the Klatchian envoy, Prince Khufurah, and set fire to their embassy, before war breaks out.

Pratchett's characters are both sympathetic and outrageously entertaining, from Captain Carrot, who always finds the best in people and puts it to work playing football, to Sergeant Colon and his sidekick, Corporal Nobbs, who have "an ability to get out of their depth on a wet pavement". Then there is the mysterious D'reg, 71-hour Ahmed. What is his part in all this, and why 71 hours? Anyone who doesn't mind laughing themselves silly at the idiocy of people in general and governments in particular will enjoy Jingo. --Nona Vero
