Um diesen Fehler wiedergutzumachen, verbrachte er 20 Jahre in England, bevor er sich entschloß, wieder in seine Heimat zurückzukehren. "Ich habe neulich gelesen, daß, laut einer Gallup-Umfrage, 3,7 Millionen Amerikaner glauben, sie seien irgendwann einmal von Außerirdischen entführt worden. Es war also klar, daß mich mein Volk brauchte." Er unternimmt eine letzte Reise quer durch England vor seiner Rückkehr in die Staaten, um die Orte, Verhaltens- und Ausdrucksweisen, die die Briten eben so verdammt britisch machen, aufzuzeichnen. Er beeindruckt, abwechselnd sarkastisch, naiv und unvoreingenommen, mit geschichtlichen Details. Das Schmunzelpotential dabei ist enorm.

Amerikaner sind von Großbritannien fasziniert -- es hat etwas Vertrautes, und doch ist es fremd; es ist in vielerlei Hinsicht dasselbe, andererseits aber auch so anders. Bryson gelingt es, seine Wahlheimat einem amerikanischen Publikum vorzuführen. Man bekommt dabei niemals den Eindruck, daß Bryson zu sehr Außenstehender ist, um die wahre Natur des Landes zu erfassen. Notes from a Small Island findet das richtige Verhältnis von unbekümmert-amerikanischem Schreibstil und ausgeprägt britischem Vokabular. Brysons hervorragendes Ohr kommt ebenso zum Zug: "...ich bemerkte die Namen der kleinen Dörfer, durch die wir kamen -- Pinhead, West Stuttering, Bakelite, Ham Hocks, Sheepshanks..."
